Now highlighted: AMETHYST
 AMETHYST is a form of quartz in which trace amounts of iron create varying shades of the color purple. It can be found in deep purple, light purple or violet, and a delicate lilac mixture of pale purple and pink. The word amethyst is derived from the Greek word amethystos, meaning not drunken or sober. The myth associated with the creation of amethyst goes back to Dionysus, the god of wine. I came across a few variations, but the basic story is that Dionysus was angered by the purity of a young woman named Amethyst. She preferred to pay homage to the goddess Diana. In his anger Dionysus ordered two tigers to devour Amethyst on her way to Diana's temple. When Diana became aware of this danger she transformed Amethyst into a statue of clear quartz crystal to protect her. Dionysus, when he beheld the beautiful maiden crystallized, felt deep remorse and cried. He shed tears into his goblet of wine, which overflowed and spilled onto the quartz, staining it purple. In another version, Dionysus poured the wine over the stone. The use of amethyst goes far back into history. In ancient Mesopotamia it was used to create seals engraved with religious symbols and the owners name. These were rolled onto clay tablets as a signature. The ancient Egyptians used it in much of their jewelry. In the Old Testament book of Exodus amethyst is mentioned as one of the stones in the breastplate of the high priest Aaron. In the early Christian church amethyst was adopted as a symbol of the highest spiritual state it's bishops must attain and an amethyst ring soon became part of the bishop's regalia. To this day, the highest grade amethyst is referred to by gem-cutters as "Bishop's Grade".
Traditionally, amethyst was used to protect against intoxication. The early Greeks drank wine from amethyst cups to help them stay sober and serious minded. In medieval times it was believed to also protect against the intoxicating effects of being in love. Amethyst amulets were worn by soldiers to protect them against harm in battle and as an antidote against poison. It was also believed to assist hunters with the capture of wild animals.
TRY THIS: As with any color or stone, the best way to determine amethyst's healing value for you is to
 experience it's  energy personally. One way of doing this is to gather together whatever you may have on hand that is purple, such as scarves, pillows, fabric swatches, construction paper, ribbon, amethyst stones and jewelry. Amethyst occurs in varying shades of purple, so it's good if your selection is varied. Lay out the items in front of you as you feel inclined. There is no right or wrong way of doing this. Clear your mind of expectation, as much as possible, and just be open to how you 'feel' about the varying shades of purple sitting in front of you. Feel free to hold the items, have conversations about what you are feeling and notice what comes into your mind. It might seem silly at first, but once you relax you'll be surprised what comes up.Be aware that there is a strong traditional association with deep purple and religion, ceremony, royalty, and people of power. Clearing the mind of those associations one still feels the impact of this rich hue. It has a powerful, encompassing, and protective energy. There is a completeness in this shade of amethyst that allows you to feel safe and secure.
Lighter tones of violet, lavender for example, transmit a much different energy than the deeper tones. Lavender brings a light openness, a blissful expansiveness. This shade of amethyst gives a sense of lightening of the spirit, an easing of ones burdens, a calming of ones travails, body, mind and spirit. Use it to destress and calm nerves that have been rattled by anger and other disturbing emotions.
Even lighter tones of violet with a touch of pink, such as lilac, bring a soft purifying, healing energy to the delicate chambers of the heart. Lilac shades of amethyst heal the inner child.
TRY THIS: Close your eyes after immersing yourself in the different shades of purple and invite a shade to come to mind. The shade that appears in your minds eye is probably the one most appropriate for you in the present time. This exercise is one way to choose the best color amethyst for you. SOME MORE INTERESTING WAYS OF LOOKING AT AMETHYST: 
When you consider that in the color spectrum violet is the step just before ultra-violet, it becomes symbolic of that which is beyond our human sight and knowing. You can say it comes from on-high. Amethyst can bring us increased trust in the divine, that which we know is there, but do not see.
Another approach to exploring the energy of violet is considering the colors that bring it into being. Being a secondary color, violet comes about with the blending of red and blue. If you've got paint available, have some fun while you explore the feeling of creating purple. Appreciate the fiery, creative, focused energy of red combining with the cool, far reaching, open expansiveness of blue. These opposites of the color spectrum find their balance together in violet. Amethyst can be used to balance extremes within us, helping us move towards a more enlightened state of being.
BITS AND PIECES ABOUT AMETHYSTThe color Violet is associated with the crown chakra, located at the top of the head. This chakra is considered to be the master control center of the chakra system. The energy coming through this center effects the entire body through the functions of the brain and mind. Amethyst can enhance higher states of consciousness, meditation and mental focus. It can also help improve the functioning of the endocrine system, bringing balance to hormone production. All of these things can effect the entire body, inside and out. No wonder amethyst is considered a master healing stone. - Forms naturally in a variety of ways: - as long prismatic crystals with a six sided pyramid at one or both ends; - in geodes of densely packed short crystals all pointing towards the center of the space; - as small crystalline crusts, called 'drusy' that form over a host rock - as clusters - is one of the most common crystals - most commercial mining sites are in South America and Africa, though it is found all around the world - in Brazil amethyst geodes are frequently human sized - is the birthstone for February and usually associated with the sign of Pisces - can be given on the 4th, 6th and 17th years of marriage |
